Like everything else with a PC you sorta have to discover this for yourself.
The rundown is:
If you want just GUI then go with Caldera or Mandrake. But then you lose a
lot of the command line look that I like. You have to open a term in the
GUI and frankly it sucks. IF you boot to run level 3 (no windows running)
even that looks awful and is hard to use. I was never able to get sendmail
running in Mandrake. Mandrake is a kinda/sorta derivative of Red Hat, but
it is not Red Hat.
If you want the best of both worlds go with Red Hat or SuSE. SuSE comes
with about 1500 applications on 6 CDs. As a beginner I'd choose one of
these.
Debian and Slackware will do about anything you want, if you know what
you're doing. If you start with one of these you might just get so
frustrated that you put your foot through the monitor.
Regardless of what the fanatical Linux pushers would have you believe, Linux
is not easy to learn. That is, if you want to be able to do anything with
it once it's installed. These days installation for most distros is about
as easy as Windows and maybe easier than NT. Configuration is another
thing. If you use and learn Linux *do not* expect hand holding. You
are
expected to learn on your own and over the course of reading HowTos and very
large books, you'll be told many times to RTFM. This is not to say that
all
Linux people are religious nuts who won't help you, but if the little battle
that went on yesterday bothers you, you're going to be bothered a lot with
Linux groups. Linux is a way of life as much as an OS and the ones who
have
spent time learning the nuances don't like to be bothered talking to
newbies. Again this is not always the case, but more so than not.
The
prime
rule with Linux is, NEVER say anything bad about Linux and bash Microsoft as
much as possible. This will make you very popular with Linux groups.
Use
things Like M$, or Windoze, when referring to Microsoft. Look forward to
the
day when Linux will rule the world and "The evil Empire" will be
vanquished
from the earth. :)
It is a fun system to use and it's stable, but like any other OS it has bugs
and problems. Having used it for about three years, at this point I don't
think it's any better than Windows 2000. If you have time to learn it,
it's
worth the effort. Just don't expect it to be like Windows. You have
to
learn to think differently because it's not built at all like Windows/DOS.
And that is my opinion about Linux.

You could re-install Real Jukebox and Real Player and use WinAmp
as your default player and just use Real Jukebox/Real Player if the
requirements are that you have to use to hear something e.g. on the=20
internet????
Did that help or did you come up with that yourself a loooong time a go.=

It may possibly be that the audio cable from the cdrom to the sound card has
been damaged within the tiny wires. Having spares around greatly helps to
assist in checking which most people don't usually have. It can still be a
problem in the electronics of the cdrom as well since the jack and the rear
audio connection are segregated and it could be that a component has gone
bad. The headphones at least tell you that the drive is capable of output.

If the sound works in the Jack, the CD-ROM drive is fine.

I usually go in and change each item manually (desktop, items, icons, etc)
and then save and restart. I'm also pretty sure that you can go into the
Win.Ini like you can with Windows 3.xx and manually edit them out. I don't
have my 95 Resource book handy but I've done a mnaul edit on occasion in the
past for similar problems.
It may be that while the O/T color scheme was slected that someone
accidentally save d that scheme as Windows Standard...try a different scheme
and see if that changes things.

Win95, older computer. Right click on desktop, select properties,
appearance and select Windows STANDARD. Do a restart and get and orange and
tan scheme. Tried it twice and each time reverted to the orange and tan.
Any ideas on getting Win 95 to do what I want in this situation?

Nah Russ...it was a setting in WinAmp, which I figured all along. It had
to
do with sampling. I wrote a previous email yesterday with the info about
what I found out. But all is fine now, except since I uninstalled Real
Player/Real Jukebox, when I start AOL, I get an error message about missing
files for AOL's media player. Ya can't win! :) Thanks
for that info
about
the cables/jack etc.

Is the fax machine a fax send/recv only or is it an all-in-one type. I have
manual for HP's fax and for some of the Officejet fax/scan/copy/print
machines. What info did you need on yours?
Check with Eric on the 5L manual, he said something bout making it available
at anohter download site. For some reason the GeoCrappy site doesn't want to
allow outside file links.

In Windows98 and SE the defrag utility used a new defrag process this
process was slow. Over the course of the last couple of years MS and Intel
have worked to make the product and technology used better and more
efficient. it has gotten much better on ME, but still has a ways to go.
